Taking your driving test in the 1st arrondissement of Paris means learning to drive in the historic and tourist heart of the capital, between the Louvre, the Tuileries and the Palais-Royal. Since 2020 the 1st has been part of the Paris Centre administrative sector, which also includes the 2nd, 3rd and 4th arrondissements. It lies entirely within the Paris Low Emission Zone, where Crit'Air 3 and more polluting vehicles are banned from circulating.

The Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, Halles, Palais-Royal and Place-Vendôme districts have extreme pedestrian density during the day. The bridges to the left bank (Pont-Neuf, pont du Carrousel, pont des Arts as a pedestrian bridge) require anticipation of lane changes and coexistence with a dense flow of powered two-wheelers and cyclists.

Getting your licence in the 1st arrondissement requires constant vigilance towards tourists crossing outside marked crossings, delivery vehicles double-parked on rue Saint-Honoré or rue de Rivoli, and the many buses converging towards Châtelet. Mastery of gaze, lane positioning and speed-braking dosage at very low speed is essential to approach the exam calmly in this area.
