Taking your driving test in the 18th arrondissement of Paris means training in a very contrasting northern district of around 183 127 residents, structured around the Montmartre hill and the Sacré-Coeur basilica, Pigalle, Barbès and the Goutte d'Or district. The 18th lies entirely within the Paris Low Emission Zone, which has banned Crit'Air 3 and more polluting vehicles since 2024. The streets climbing the Montmartre hill, such as rue Caulaincourt, rue Lepic and rue des Abbesses, are narrow and steeply sloped, making them a demanding training ground for uphill starts. Place du Tertre and the surroundings of the Sacré-Coeur generate permanent tourist crowds.

To obtain a category B licence in Paris 18, candidates must master merging onto the northern ring road via porte de Saint-Ouen, porte de Clignancourt, porte de la Chapelle and porte d'Aubervilliers. Direct access to the A1 towards Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle from porte de la Chapelle is one of the most used passages in Paris. Gare du Nord, on the border of the 10th, and Gare de l'Est generate intense taxi and ride-hail traffic, particularly at international departure times.

Preparing for the licence in the 18th also requires handling the many steep, sometimes cobbled streets around the Sacré-Coeur, and the one-way streets imposed by the topography of the hill. Coexistence with the heavily used buses on lines 30, 31, 60, 80, 85 and 95, the cycle paths added along boulevard Barbès, and pedestrian density around the metro exits Abbesses, Anvers, Pigalle, Barbès-Rochechouart and Marx-Dormoy demand from candidates constant vigilance, perfect mastery of clutch dosage on slopes and a mobile reading of the urban environment.
