A2 to A Upgrade in Paris 17e Arrondissement

Taking your driving test in the 17th arrondissement of Paris means training in a very contrasting north-western district of around 159 212 residents, structured around place de l'Étoile at the extreme south, the Palais des Congrès at porte Maillot, the Batignolles district and the new Paris Courthouse at Batignolles. The 17th lies entirely within the Paris Low Emission Zone, which has banned Crit'Air 3 and more polluting vehicles since 2024. The arrondissement, known as the "arrondissement des Batignolles-Monceau", provides direct access to the A14 motorway towards La Défense via porte Maillot and to the western ring road.

The Ternes, Plaine-Monceau, Batignolles and Épinettes districts show very different profiles. Avenue de la Grande-Armée, which extends avenue des Champs-Élysées towards porte Maillot, avenue de Wagram, avenue de Villiers and boulevard Pereire structure the southern part of the arrondissement. The Batignolles district, deeply reshaped with the Paris Courthouse and the Martin-Luther-King park, has modified traffic with wide cycle lanes and reduced lanes. Parc Monceau, on the border of the 8th, adds a Haussmann residential area with quiet streets.

To obtain a category B licence in Paris 17, candidates must master merging onto the northern and western ring road via porte Maillot, porte des Ternes, porte de Champerret, porte d'Asnières and porte de Clichy. The exit towards the A14 (paying motorway to La Défense and Cergy-Pontoise) via porte Maillot is one of the most used accesses. Proximity to the Saint-Lazare station to the south-east generates intense bus and taxi traffic.

Preparing for the licence in the 17th also requires properly reading complex intersections such as place Charles-de-Gaulle (Étoile) shared with the 8th and 16th, place de la Porte-Maillot, place du Maréchal-Juin and place de Clichy shared with the 8th, 9th and 18th. The heavily used bus lanes on lines 30, 31, 43, 53, 84, 92 and 94, the widened cycle lanes in the Batignolles district, and coexistence with pedestrians around the Palais des Congrès and the Martin-Luther-King park require from candidates heightened vigilance, precise positioning in the lanes and good acceleration management on sometimes faster axes.
